We once again toast to World Tourism Day, this year in partnership with the Adega do Sossego restaurant. On September 27th, all visitors who choose this iconic venue for lunch or dinner will be greeted with a welcome glass of Alvarinho Dona Paterna – 2024 vintage, recently awarded three gold medals.
Located just a stone’s throw from the heart of Melgaço, Adega do Sossego is recognized for the authenticity of its regional cuisine, making it an ideal setting to celebrate hospitality and tradition. This joint initiative seeks to recognize those who make tourism an experience of discovery and sharing, reinforcing the connection between excellent wines and local cuisine.
Celebrating World Tourism Day at Adega do Sossego is our way of thanking everyone who chooses Melgaço as their destination. An Alvarinho toast is an invitation to experience the essence of our land, where hospitality is served at the table and in the glass,” emphasizes Carlos Codesso, producer of Dona Paterna. “We believe that it’s in small experiences, like a shared glass of Alvarinho, that the secret to a truly memorable tourism (moment) lies,” he emphasizes.

WORLD TOURISM DAY
World Tourism Day is celebrated on September 27, 2025, under the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” chosen by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
This year, it aims to highlight the importance of rethinking the sector, promoting more responsible and environmentally friendly practices capable of generating real benefits for local communities and protecting natural resources.
Sustainable tourism is seen as an essential tool for economic, social, and environmental development, encouraging everyone—from travelers to businesses and governments—to make conscious and innovative choices.

A UNIQUE TERROIR IN THE WORLD
Thanks to its Atlantic exposure and a climate characterized by high rainfall, atmospheric humidity, mild temperatures, and small temperature variations, the Alvarinho grape variety reaches its full potential in this terroir.
Alvarinho wine is a noble wine. It should be grown at an altitude of up to 200 meters, thus enjoying the perfect conditions for maturation. Hence its rarity and low production. Monção and Melgaço are not only the birthplace, but also the birthplace of Alvarinho.
“Monção and Melgaço have a unique terroir, with microclimate and soil conditions that allow for the production of excellent Alvarinho wines, recognized worldwide. Monção and Melgaço are, without a doubt, the origin of Alvarinho,” states Carlos Codesso.
The Monção and Melgaço sub-region was created in 1908, integrated into the Vinho Verde Region, but the Alvarinho grape variety has existed in Portugal for over 700 years.
